Firefighters went to the rescue of cow after it became stuck in fast-moving water.

Crews from Keynsham and Bath attended to the animal which could not get out of the river at Hanham Mills.

The cow was stuck about a mile upstream from the Chequers pub at about 6.45pm yesterday.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service used the safety boat from Bath to guide the cow towards a slipway and then on to dry land, where he was handed over to the farmer.

“The cow & her calf were actually chased into the swollen river by an out of control dog, that should have been on a lead !
The cow was rescued by the fire fighters after spending nearly 3 hours in a flooded river unfortuantely her calf was not so lucky and is still missing presumed drowned.
This whole situation was caused completely by the irresponsible behaviour of the dog owner who should have never entered a field containing livestock without complete control of their dog, has cost the life of 1 calf and wasted untold ammounts of time & money effecting the rescue.”

“It must be quite depressing for a journalist to have to write this sort of thing. Woodward and Bernstein it's not.”
