Firebrands hot up challenge for title
Hockey round-up: FIREBRANDS Ladies are second in Slazenger EHA National Conference West following a 2-1 home win over Sutton Coldfield.
After a goalless first-half, the home side won the game with goals from Louise Hipkins and Kathryn Bache.
Firebrands' winning run continued on Sunday in the EHA Cup with a 2-1 win over Woking. Georgie Field scored both goals for Firebrands, whose next game is away to Exe on Saturday.
Clifton Ladies are still third in the EHA Premier Division, despite a 7-3 defeat to Olton/West Warwicks.
Olton's Denise Marston Smith grabbed a hat-trick against her former side and the home goals were scored by Carla Dunnett, Carys Hopkins and Sandra Frankland. Clifton's next league match is at Canterbury on Saturday.
In the EHA Cup last Sunday, goals from Beth Fisher (3), Abi Welsher (2) and one each from Vicki Roper, Leah Wilkinson and Tina Mash gave Clifton an emphatic victory over Teddington.
Firebrands men were defeated 6-1 at Stourport after trailing 2-1 at half-time. The only Firebrands goal was scored by Andy Edwards after 16 minutes.
Tom Edwards and Dan Nicoll caused the home side numerous problems, but Firebrands were unable to add to their first-half goal.
Firebrands play the University of Birmingham at Failand on Sunday in their next National Conference West match.
In West Women's Premier I, Clifton 2nds defeated last year's champions Lansdown 2-1.
Zoe Barnett, Mel Joseph and Sue Cain all scored hat-tricks for Thornbury.
Barnett's came in the first-team win over Lodway, Joseph's was in the second-team victory over Jaspers and Cain's was in the third-team's win over North Somerset.
Newly-promoted Old Bristolians defeated Cheddar 4-0 in Central Division with goals scored by Vicky Castle (2), Caroline Donnelly and Sam Cotterell.
In Men's Premier I, Westbury/Utd Banks lost 3-0 against Bristol University, while Gareth Nicholls, Tom Colquhoun and Chris Poulsom netted as the seconds lost 4-3 against Lydney.
The third team drew 3-3 with City of Bath. Their goals were scored by James Pearce-Smith (2) and Nathan Wakley.
