A STUDENT from Southville has quit university after two years of study to take up an apprenticeship.

Lucy Gilbert, 21, followed her creative ambition and began a fine art degree in 2010.

But half way through her second year, she realised university was not for her and started an apprenticeship instead.

Lucy said: "I found university increasingly difficult, studying and trying to work at the same time. The pressure got too much and I realised I couldn't carry on so I started looking for jobs."

While working as an administration assistant for a home improvement company, Lucy chose to go back to college to do an apprenticeship.

She is now five months into a NVQ level 2 course in business administration which she is taking as an apprentice HR administrator at the Sheiling School in Thornbury.

Lucy said: "I am so glad I looked for an apprenticeship. After two interviews I came to Sheiling School and knew immediately that I wanted to work here. I was so happy when I received the news that I had the job.

"I really enjoy working here. It doesn't feel like anyone is above me or that I'm different to any of the other employees. I have a good amount of responsibility which allows me to have pride in my work and I feel like a fully integrated team member.I am now hoping to stay on and undertake the next level."

Sara Grogan, office manager at the school, said: "We currently have three apprentices at the Sheiling School. All of the apprentices have been of great benefit within the organisation and brought with them an enthusiasm to learn.

"We have enjoyed seeing confidence grow as they learn, on the job, how our organisation works. The experience gained is invaluable in what is currently a challenging, economic climate for young people.

"The scheme, with the support of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, has been such a success we would be open to employing more apprentices in the future."

“I was behind her in the queue at Aldi last night, I reckon that's about as newsworthy as the story.”
