Workers at financial services firm Computershare, the biggest employer in South Bristol, are facing another round of job cuts, weeks after the last round.

It follows the decision by insurers Standard Life to end its contract with the company in favour of rivals Capita.

Computershare, which employs about 1,000 staff at its Bedminster Down HQ, made 88 workers redundant just before Christmas as the recession started to bite.

Now unions fear at least 100 more jobs will go over the next five months. The Standard Life contract ends in July.

Trade union Unite Amicus said it had been told the company, business of which includes share registration, had launched an immediate root-and-branch review and a consultation period about redundancies could start in March or April.

A Computershare spokesman said: "We found out on Wednesday that we had lost the contract.

"We were very disappointed and surprised. We don't have any reasons from Standard Life yet.

"We would definitely be undertaking an assessment of how the loss of the contract will affect us. We estimate this will take a couple of weeks.

She said the company would continue to keep staff fully informed.

“George. I would have no hesitation in parking an old banger outside your manor and leaving it there to rust you doddery fool.”

“Did you really expect much sympathy if you value a trivial matter such as parking access over the livelihood of another 90 families?

These people could be on job seekers allowance in a matter of months looking for work in an industry that's in deep recession, but at least the semi-retired 50 somethings that have reaped the benefits of the economic boom of the last 15 years can park nearer to their detatched bungalows.”

“I NEVER give anybody any abuse for parking outside my property. I cannot believe the animosity of some posters. Do posters read all comments before commenting? I said at the very beginning I was being selfish and I apologised for that. But, 99% park thoughtfully, i think not!! Cannot understand why they don't park on one side of the road, at least then the traffic would be able to move smoothly. Occassionally, when necessary (usually if we are expecting a delivery of furniture) we have asked people not to park there that day, no problem, but we do not spend our days waiting to pounce on unsuspecting computershare staff. Sorry I posted my comment, thought we lived in a democracy. My mistake!!!!!!!”

“It's dissapointing that people's livelihoods are at stake and all people care about is an 8 by 4 foot piece of tarmac that they don't actually own.

I have my own space but you'd be amazed at the "pomp" and the "not on my own doorstep" attitude of the middle classes that live opposite work and the lengths they will go to to stop people parking near their house, 99% of which park quite legally and considerately I might at add, and has nothing to do with the "way" they are parked. Traffic cones for example, which is in fact illegal if there is no reason for it. I know I'd rather have a car parked outside my house than a few scruffy cones acquired from a building site.

You also might be suprised to hear George of the amount of work Computershare actually does for the local community and that as a disabled person it may actually be benefitting YOU to have workers in the area. It donates to local and national chartities (including medical/ disabled!) on an almost weekly basis, a donation of £25,000 has recently been made to Children's Hospice South West and they are currently fundraising for it's own charity Change A Life in conjuction with the Bristol 10k Clarke Willmott Business Challenge, we've have also helped to renovate local schools and community centres.

So the next time you frown on someone for parking outside your house George, you may want to cut them some slack.”

“Soarer, Are you sure that other drivers are allowed to use the bay - if so, that is not a problem. Most posters on here on under the impression I spend my days cussing about people parking outside my house, believe me, if that was all I had to worry about i would be a very happy person. The only times I get annoyed is when they park inconsiderately!”

“George, life throws us little problems along the way and we have to sort them out. Your problem is you have people parking legally outside your house and although they have every right to be there as a householder I am sure it can get annoying sometimes if it inconveniences you. So get the disabled bay you are entitled to. Since you dont want to on teh grounds of being selfish to neighbours you can let them park in it when they are at home so the car can be moved if needed. Simple really and one less thing to worry about :-)”

“The other car park is empty at the fault of the landlords NOT computershare. They wont let the employees park in there for some reason. Even thought its been empty for about 2 years. We hate it as much as you but unfortunately there's no where else to park.”

“A sad day for my ex-colleagues - I'm glad that I left whilst the going was good. I am glad that I am working, I would hate to be stressed out by something as major as a car parked outside of my house!”

    “Wow.

A story about people potentially losing their jobs, totally and utterly eclipsed by one dodeery old man's inane whining about parking sapces.

    Well done, the internet.”
