Filton Tory councillors urge transparency from Labour Filton
Filton Tory councillors have issued a statement in response to the news that the local Filton Labour branch, have agreed to discuss Filton Town council matters behind closed doors, prior to meetings. The group do not publish to the public, minutes from meetings they hold, raising concerns how the council reach its decisions.
Rikki Teml, Ann Kenyon, Doug Daniels and Keiran Hyde, Conservative councillors on Filton Town council issued a statement in response to the Labour news:

Filton conservatives urge Labour to be transparent
The Conservative statement said: "Conservative Filton Town Councilors
do not hold meetings before town council meetings at which public /
non-town councilors are present.
"In the interest of transparency we meet officially before the start of
each term in May to discuss who is interested in joining which
committees. We do not have any official meetings monthly but we will ask
colleagues for information discussed at any public meetings, which
others had not attended in order to have further information on topics
within the agenda.
"No agreements are made during these discussions as to how individuals
would vote on agenda items. Our councillors always go into formal
council meetings and listen to the debate, reports etc. and take the
appropriate decision/position.
They urged any meetings councillors hold should be following the rules and have only councillors present when discussing council matters. They go on to add:
"We would never discuss confidential matters at public meetings, the
only staffing information we ever receive comes officially from the
council; we would not support any meetings apart from official council
ones discussing staffing issues."
Last week it emerged that two South Glos Labour councillors Adam Monk and Ian Scott, were ousted from the role of chair and vice chair of the Filton Labour branch and at the same meeting, members agreed to discuss Filton Town council matters prior to official meetings.
On confidential elements being discussed at unofficial meetings, the Conservative councillors said:
"We would like to add that any group meetings that may take place are
useful, information sharing exercises aimed at helping group members in
their elected roles. Only appropriate issues would be discussed amongst
Conservative Filton Town Councilors only. There would be NO sharing of
confidential matters with people who are not elected members/council
officers."
Labour councillors have yet to comment on their meeting decision or the Conservative statement.

“rather ironic that this is the same pub that is "council run" and makes a loss since 2008.”

“If you want to know whats going on at these labour branch meetings, the answer is a simple one. Pop along to the Ratepayers pub in Filton, buy yourself a pint and wait in the bar as you will not have to wait long. Labour councillors love nothing more than discussing council business loudly and plan their coups over a pint, they do it reguarly. I get all my information there its great.”

“The comparisons with how Conservative Councillors behave in Portishead is amazing. Secrecy, back room meetings and no transparency seems to be the norm and the most undemocratic the council has ever been. Last year the Tory Council chairman ( seconded by another Tory) wanted to take the secrecy even further by banning the public from even speaking at meetings. No doubt if Filton had a Tory Council they would do exactly the same. It's time people got the power back from these so called 'representatives' of ours.”

“Labour should be ashamed of allowing this type of behaviour. They think they are a law unto themselves and can do what they like. Wrong.
Thankfully Filton conservatives have made it clear, they wont stand for this nonsense. They need to ask before every vote at council, whether it has already been pre- discussed at labour branch, before voting. This will force the albour councillors to either confirm or deny it and should mean abstensions if they have!”

“At last some common sense words from councillors in Filton thank goodness.
Thats all people want is open and honest councillors, not secret meetings. I hope these councillors ask labour what they think gives them the right to discuss matters in private.”

“An excellent response from genuine Conservative councillors, who mean what they say and have done nothing but good on the council since they took up office. Its a shame the digraceful labour lot can't do the same. Only interested in personal power.
Local politics should always be for the good of the Town not the party and Labour are playing big boy politics with our area, hence so many services and issues going wrong!”
