JUDO fighters from a Bristol club have followed in the footsteps of their medal-winning teachers.

Head coach of the Bradley Stoke Judo Club, Pete Douglas, won gold in the under 100kg British Masters category in Cardiff for the fifth time and third-dan Nick Brace, 35, from Filton, won the U73kg category for the third time.

Now the pair have seen their tutoring bear fruit after watching their proteges win three awards at the British National Judo Championship last weekend.

Athletes from the Bradley Stoke group, which has around 100 fighters, proved they were among the best in the country by winning two silver and one bronze medals at the event on September 19 in London.

Mr Douglas, 47, from Bradley Stoke, told the Evening Post: "They are fighting kids who are competing every weekend while that was our lots first fight outside the West Country."

All five fighters, aged 10 and 11, who travelled to the championships at the Crystal Palace National Sports centre had proved they were ready, said the coaches.

And the results proved them right, with Ellie Britton and Jack Reeves earning silver medals, Tasha Okoye winning a bronze and Megan Robinson and Ellie Young gaining valuable experience of taking on the best in the country.
