This is Bristol

I appreciate Mark Lloyd-Davies (Open Lines, August 6) doesn't live in Bristol, which perhaps explains his complete lack of knowledge about local services.

If he had been to Hengrove Park recently, he would appreciate that the vital infrastructure needed for the South Bristol Community Hospital is nearing completion.

Of course, we all want to see our hospital treating patients as soon as possible. Thanks to the thousands of Bristol South residents who have supported my campaign, we are now closer than ever to a new hospital. We saw no progress whatsoever during 18 years of Tory government.

Mr Lloyd-Davies is right to point out that health spending has trebled since 1997.

If he knew Bristol South, he would realise that this funding will not only help provide the hospital, but has also seen the opening of Knowle West Health Park, Bedminster Family Practice and Whitchurch Health Centre, to name just a few.

He may want to reflect on the Government's investment, in stark contrast to his party's record of failure, when he's next travelling to Bristol.

Dawn Primarolo,

Labour MP for Bristol South.

“Perhaps you'd care to comment and apologise for this Dawn?
"Dawn Primarolo The Childrens and Families Minister claimed second home expenses for her constituency home in Bristol until 2004, when she flipped her expense claims to her London flat.

Overnight her monthly claims for mortgage interest went up from £317 to £1,313. Having claimed a relatively modest £12,553 in 2003-04, Miss Primarolo's total claims under the Additional Costs Allowance rose sharply after the move, and by 2007-08 she was claiming the maximum permissible amount of £23, 083.
Miss Primarolo also claimed for council tax, utilities, a cleaner and for her TV licence."

“In Helmand, South Afghanistan, stands a brand new, state of the art, fully equipped £11 million hospital, completed on time. Dawn and her New Labour colleagues must wake up to the idea of spending our money where it is needed (Hengrove) and not in Helmand - an unwanted, unwinnable, unjustified war in a country thousands of miles away.

I'm South Bristol through and through - and Both the Bedminster AND Whitchurch facilities were in existance well before 1997, so no credit to New Labour there. Further, the extra spending mentioned is going into the NHS but is exceeded by that going OUT of the NHS into private pockets. New Labour has disguised its privatisation programmes with fancy names: Partnerships, Outsourcing, PFI, etc. But we have seen through this, it's good old fashioned Thatcherite privatisation, more bucks for the fat cats paid for by the taxes of ordinary working people - people that are still waiting for their hospital.

    Sorry Dawn. Nul points.”
