Father tells court of anger over tots' injuries
THE father of twin baby girls, who were allegedly assaulted, said their mother told him both tots had fallen from their chairs.
The dad told Bristol Crown Court he received an emotional phone call from his former partner, saying both babies had fallen.
He described how he was very angry when, later, he was informed how seriously his daughters were injured.
It is claimed the tots, aged just nine months at the time, were assaulted as their mother slept off a heavy drink binge. The 23-year-old mum from Hartcliffe was so drunk she wet herself as she was put to bed by her new boyfriend, the jury was told.
It is alleged that, with the mum not rousable the next morning, her boyfriend shook one tot so badly the girl suffered four fractured ribs, two crushed vertebrae, bleeding between her skull and brain and bleeding to her spinal cord.
The other baby suffered multiple bruising.
The mother, whom the Evening Post is not naming to protect the identities of her children, denies causing cruelty to both tots by wilful neglect between March 5 and 8, 2010.
Her partner at the time, aged 24 and from Arnos Vale, denies causing cruelty to both tots by wilful assault on March 7 2010.
The babies' father said he saw the twins when his mother took regular care of them.
He said on March 7, 2010, he was called by the tot's mum, who said both girls had fallen from their chairs, one had suffered a cut head, and she was going to hospital with them.
He told the jury: "I had no idea how serious it was. I got a call from my mum at the hospital and I rang (the babies' mum) straight away.
"I was angry, very angry. I asked how the girls got their injuries and she said 'I don't know what happened, I don't know what happened'."
He said he didn't know her boyfriend, but had been told the man was good with the babies.
The case continues.
