Farooq Siddique: We are all ambassadors for Islam

Being a Muslim in Bristol or anywhere else in the western world is, for many, becoming increasingly difficult.

And I don't mean in a "losing faith" way. I mean in the burden of growing responsibility it carries.

The more I talk to my fellow Muslims, the more I'm becoming aware that they seem to be walking on egg shells. An increasing number are less willing to stand for their faith openly, and less confident even just to talk about it.

I can understand their reluctance.

I'm perhaps, in a better position than most to know how misquoted and misunderstood my religion is.

The people that take the time and effort to comment on my column every week are, in some cases, a microcosm of the kind of negative language and responses that many Muslims read and hear everyday, associated with their faith.

Every Muslim nowadays, whether they like it or not, or accepts it or not, is an ambassador for their faith.

From the eloquent preacher, bringing comfort and solace to countless hearts, to the rabid extremist willing to go to heaven for a very earthly cause.

All of them, and everyone in between, if they happen to be Muslim, are ambassadors for Islam.

So it's time Muslims wised up to it, and acted accordingly.

It is especially true of those that are obviously Muslim.

If you have shunned western dress and are more comfortable in eastern clothes then so be it. But don't then walk down the street with a frown.

Smile! Say "hello", (yes, "hello"), to the people, the complete strangers you meet in the street.

Be polite. I know you don't have to be, no one else is, but that's the point.

You do. You are Muslim. If you are a Muslim taxi driver, opting to wear eastern clothes – that's fine too.

But that must be a universally recognised sign of assurance that you will be honest and fair, in the fare you charge.

If you are a Muslim shopkeeper with a long beard, don't then stand behind the sales counter selling alcohol? I know everyone else does it, but you are Muslim!

I'm not saying I'm perfect. I'm far from it, and accept equal blame. And I know it sounds harsh.

But with so many causing so much misunderstanding of our faith, if we all, and I mean all, don't start acting the part, then not only is society all the more poorer for it, but our faith is that much weaker.

It is high time to take up your office, ambassador.

“Islam is dangerous, violent, and above ALL satanic. In actual fact, Satanism is bad, but the atrocities committed in the name of prophet Mo' are worse!”

    “Farooq,

    Thanks for your reply.

I need to spend some time getting together an answer.

And yes, it makes sense to focus on one or two quotes at a time - and quotes around the same topic to help the debate.

    Regards”

“Let's get all of these middle eastern desert cults out of our national fabric. Jews, Christians and Muslims. We have our own indigenous beliefs in these Islands and across northern europe. If we can get back to the teachings of those beliefs, where we concentrate on living in harmony with nature, living honourably and bravely and putting kith and kin first, we will all be better off.

“I despare at some of the ranting ill-educated comments on this board. Whilst i do not agree with all of Farooq's views, I welcome his weekly article with interest. I believe that the fact we are able to read about someone's first hand experience of being of the Muslim faith is a great thing, after 9/11 and 7/7 there are now so many who fear this religion and are quick to tar all followers with the same brush as the extremists who carried out these atrocities, and a columnist like Farooq is incredibly important in dispelling this myth.
For those copying and pasting manuscripts from religious texts - Im sure that in all religious texts for all religions you would find the same ideology, i.e. our religions better than yours etc¿.just in a different context. This is not what this column is about, this is about a Muslim man doing his best to educate the people of Bristol about the day to day life he leads and the laws he chooses to live his life by.
Never has it been said he would expect us to do the same, never has he once blasted another's religious views, and never has there been any plea for Muslim laws to become part of British law.
Like I said, I have disagreed with certain things Farooq has written about ¿ however I am educated and grown up enough to respect his religion and opinion as his own, and not mine to lambast.”

“I cannot accept that every person Farooq segregates as being Muslim are stupid enough to privately believe that the Quran is the infallible word of his god.
The charge of treason for going against Islam.
As Farooq says Islam is a political force, and he is spot on. It SHOULD be criticised, as any other political entity is. The Quran is a political book. There must NEVER be in this country a law that forbids criticism of ANY religion.
As for the many acts of charity mentioned here by the male taxi drivers etc.who are segregated, by Farooq and even some of his critics, as being Muslims first and human beings second, they are INDIVIDUALS, and are individually responsible for their actions. They should hold up there heads as individuals, as members of the human race, not Muslims, or trainspotters.”

    “Good point gelly.
However, the Methodist Rev is at least refreshingly honest enough to publicly recognize that his guidebook is probably fiction.
Only at the end of his last piece did he make what I took to be a personal leap of faith. I liked his comments about rose tinting and his approach to miracles is still a little rose tinted to me, but I am probably biased, having been indoctrinated from an early age with this sort of nonsense.
In one sense I agree with him about Christmas. Yes I know it was probably hijacked etc but that is in the past. It is at present a good opportunity to spread a bit of good cheer around, religious or not.”

“Also, in answer to the Saudi Arabia question. There are no churches there because the state prohibits Christians worshipping.”
