It was the best choice for the occasion when the musical Singin' in the Rain was shown at a gala film night in Stoke Bishop.

As the heavens opened yet again, movie fans and supporters of a major fundraising appeal arrived at St Mary Magdalene's Church for the "premiere" night.

The event was the latest moneyspinner for the Beyond 150 appeal, a £4-million campaign to renovate the community buildings surrounding the church. It has been running since March and timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the church next spring.

Events held already to bring in the cash include a jazz concert, a performance by Fred Wedlock, summer fete and treasure hunt.

About £1m is needed to restore the interior of the church, while a further £3m will be spent on building new rooms next door to be used by the whole community.

The fundraisers are on target for the first phase, which will include new heating, lighting and re-ordering of the church.
