FACTFILE

■ At least 80,000 adult women are raped in the UK each year (one study says 100,000), Government research found.

■ 6.1 million women have been sexually assaulted, says the Home Office.

■ Between 75 and 95 per cent of rapes are never reported to the police and 40 per cent of victims never tell anyone.

■ About 86 per cent of perpetrators know their victims, however distantly.

■ 40 per cent of young people know girls whose boyfriends have pressurised them to have sex, a 2006 study revealed.

■ The rate of false allegations is no higher than for other crimes – only three per cent are categorised as "probably" or "possibly false" by the police.
