Darren Way rejects out of hand the notion that the FA Cup is now less important than it once was.

The Yeovil Town midfielder is proof of what is possible in the oldest knockout competition in the world.

The Cup has taken Way to memorable matches against Bolton Wanderers, Charlton and, most famously of all, Liverpool.

Of course, League One survival is Yeovil's priority for this season.

But the chances of that can be improved by winning today's first-round tie with Stockport and claiming the £20,000 prize money that goes with it.

"It is certainly not less important to me and certainly not to the manager," insisted the 28-year-old.

"The FA Cup is an exciting day, whether you are sat at home or if you are involved.

"It gives you a break from the league and it is a different sort of mentality because you know you have to win that game.

"It makes it entertaining itself.

"I have had all my most memorable times in the FA Cup.

"Even going to Bolton, it brings its own excitement."

Stockport's visit to Huish Park is a step into the unknown for Way.

"Stockport are a team I haven't played yet, so it will be interesting to see what they have to offer, but we have to play our own game," he said.

"With the crowd behind us this is not an easy place to come to and we have to make it like that on Saturday.

"We have to be mentally strong when we go into the game and treat it like it is a big game."

Yeovil head into the match on the back of a four-game unbeaten run.

"It is going really well of late – it was a great result at Oldham (2-0) and we want to continue our form in the FA Cup," said Way.

"As a squad we believe we can win every game. It has not quite turned out like that but everyone is focussed. People sometimes don't expect us to get results but in the camp we believe we have got a good side.

"The gaffer is trying to build as much as he can with the resources he's got.

"We took our chances on Saturday and that is the major difference.

"We have drawn a lot of games this year and perhaps we should have taken our chances.

"When you score goals that wins you games."

The arrival of two centre forwards – Scott Rendell and Gifton Noel-Williams – makes midfield goals a more likely prospect.

"We are always looking to get more goals from midfield," said Way.

"We have got a bit more licence to get forward, playing with Gary Roberts and Lee Peltier.

"I am looking to get into the box every game. With the formation we play it gives you more of a chance, especially when the centre forward is holding the ball up.

"The new signings have given us all a lift. They bring something different and they are eager and want to win."
