Visitors to Yate Heritage Centre had the chance to see what life was like as a 19th century coal miner.

A Mining Day was organised to coincide with an exhibition on the Frog Lane Colliery, which was the last deep pit in the Bristol coalfield and the last mine in the Coalpit Heath and Yate area.

It closed down 60 years ago and the exhibition features items from the South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group - from helmets and pick axes to pit pony harnesses and miners' lamps.

The display is the result of a two-year link-up between the research group and the heritage centre. A book recording the history of the pit has also been produced and it on sale for £12.

Yate Town Council and South Gloucestershire Council funded the project and the exhibition will continue in Yate until July 4. It will then tour the district.

Yate community heritage centre's David Hardill said: "The exhibition draws on some fantastic images from life down Frog Lane in the early 1900s."
