Exeter City fan Adrian Edmondson backs Bristol to bring 2018 World Cup football out West
Adrian Edmondson is the latest celebrity to endorse Bristol and England's 2018 World Cup ambitions while on a return to the city with his band.
The Bottom star made his name in The Comic Strip Presents and by playing Vyvyan Basterd in The Young Ones which, although set in North London, was filmed in Bristol.
Its success paved the way for his lengthy career in comedy alongside Rik Mayall.
This week he was back in the West Country with his band the Bad Shepherds to help mark the 10th anniversary of the St George's Bristol venue, a former church in Clifton.
Football fan Edmondson said he would love to see the World Cup back in England for the first time since 1966, and believes it would be great to have games in the South West.
"I do like footy," said the Exeter City fan, as he posed with an Evening Post Back The Bid scarf. "It would be really good to have the World Cup again and have a game or two in Bristol. I don't think we'd have any games down in Exeter though."
It is less than a month until the Bristol 2018 team submit their bid to their England 2018 counterparts at Wembley and are finalising Bristol's case to become a host venue.
Buoyed by the latest figures from the UK Tourism Survey which rank Bristol as the fourth most popular UK overnight tourist destination in 2008, to go with its many other accolades, the bid team is still looking for your involvement.
And you could be joining them on the journey down the M4 to present the bid.
As announced in yesterday's Post, we want you to design the football which will be part of the city's bid.
Only two balls will be manufactured, one for our winner, and the other to be part of the bid to the Football Association.
Our winner will also join the team delivering the bid to Wembley in November.
The theme 'come and play' should be the focus and we want you to capture what's special about the city.
The design must be contained within a 20cm diameter circle which can fit on an A4 piece of paper - but it cannot feature a specific football team.
It can be drawn by hand or digitally but any digital submission must be by the person submitting the design and not taken from an existing source.
Applications should be sent to: Design a football, Andy Sloan, Evening Post, Temple Way, Bristol BS99 7HD or email a.sloan@bepp.co.uk and mark in the subject box: Design a football.
Entries must be received by Thursday, October 22.
To register your support of the bid sign up to www.thisisbristol.co.uk/worldcup or text BRISTOL to 62018.
