Bath supporters were given a glimpse of overseas signing Luke Watson at last – and the versatile former Springbok did not disappoint, scoring a trademark close-range try in the 21-11 LV Cup win over Ospreys.

Watson said: "I've only been here a week-and-a-half and it all's been a bit chaotic.

"I was aware of all the rivalry and tradition around today's game so I knew it was going to be a physical encounter. I really enjoyed it.

"The main thing for me was to remember all the moves, try to fit into the structures, adapt as quickly as I could into the Bath strategy and fit into their style of play."

Bath's coaching team did not hide their relief at finally winning a home game, even though victory over Ospreys is no guarantee of further progress in the Anglo-Welsh competition.

"Given the conditions, it was never going to be pretty," said forwards coach Martin Haag, who could take a great deal of satisfaction from his pack's domination, particularly in the scrums.

"The performance in patches was really good. It may not have been the prettiest but sometimes when you need to win and you want some confidence, you just stick to the things you say you will do and come away with a win."

On the specific plus points, Haag added: "I also think that for some of the academy guys who played today and haven't had many opportunities, it was a chance for them to show the senior coaches what they can do, not just through the A League but in a proper environment.

"There were a number of individuals who did a really good job today. Nathan Catt, who came in after being injured through the summer; Guy Mercer did a great job on open side in his first big game, Ben Williams in the centre and Scott Hobson too."

Ospreys skipper Jerry Collins was pleased his side kept in touch throughout despite having to field so many youngsters themselves.

"We tried to play some rugby but we gave away too many penalties. We were in it right to the end, though," he said.
