Evolutionist Richard Dawkins warns Bristol audience of 'general ignorance of science'
Controverial evolutionist Richard Dawkins warned of the "growing Islamic presence in British schools" when he spoke at a sell-out event in Bristol.
In an answer to a question from the audience, he said he was disturbed by the number of people who think the world has only been around for 6,000 years which is an "astonishing error".
-

He said: "The number of people who reject evolution is disturbingly high. Teachers and lecturers, even at university level, are finding students shut up their ears when they hear evolution mentioned. They just don't listen."
He said he was concerned about the growing Islamic presence in British schools which made the teaching of science more difficult.
"There seems to be a general ignorance of science," he said. "Twenty-eight per cent of Britons think that people co-existed with dinosaurs."
Earlier he read excerpts from his latest book, called The Greatest Show on Earth.
Tickets for the event, part of Bristol's Festival of Ideas, sold out in two days.
Like Charles Darwin, whose work On the Origin of Species caused outrage on its publication in 1859, Mr Dawkins courted controversy in one of his earlier books by suggesting that people who believe in God are delusional because there is no scientific evidence for the existence of a divine creator. In his latest book he takes on creationists, including followers of 'Intelligent Design' and all those who question the fact of evolution through natural selection.
He sifts through scientific facts and disciplines in each chapter to prove the theory of evolution. His wife, actress Lalla Ward, who appeared in Dr Who, took it in turns with him to read from the book.
He says in the book that American science teachers have been "hassled and stymied and threatened with the loss of their job" and were often faced with the "close-folded arms of brainwashed children."
After the talk dozens of people queued to have copies of the latest book signed by the author.

“Ah yes, thanks for pointing out one thing that I overlooked in your vitriol Peter. Irrelevant.
I have no personal connection with Dawkins at all, never met the man or knowingly spoken to anyone who has, but that's irrelevant.
I've never before heard of Mrs Garrison, but of course, she is irrelevant .
The ability of intelligent individuals to contribute towards our scientific understanding despite the fog of superstitious tradition of all persuasions is admirable, but irrelevant.
I do have an interest in evidence however and the evidence suggests to me that a group that is supposed to literally believe in the Quran, a book that mentions some forty times that Allah is the creator god, are likely to question some aspects of the Darwinian explanation of evolution. The evidence also suggests that Islamic religious belief may be a significant factor in the gradual decline since the golden age in the advancement in science generally in Muslim societies.
Belief in Allah, the creator god, is growing in this country and people like Dawkins would be remiss if they failed to point that out.
I put it to you that a child who is initially taught that Islam is the true path of life, when confronted in a classroom with a stark choice between Darwinian evolution and a creator will side at least partly with Allah. But thats just my opinion based on relevant facts.
If you want to know what evidence Dawkins cites for his CONCERN about an increasing Muslim influence on Darwinian evolution and the inability to date to find evidence of any creator then, my goodness you are slow on the uptake aren't you, read his book. You know full well of course that he doesn't just single out Muslims, but don't let evidence get in the way of an irrelevant, venemous rant.
I could suggest that after any possible further rants on your part you wipe the spittle from your chin, but that would be, like your ramblings, irrelevant.
I suspect that Dawkins patience for explaining the obvious is greater than mine Peter so for the last time look up some RELEVANT evidence yourself, only this time try not to start with the preconception that because you don't like him he must be wrong.
Ah but you don't want to read the book do you, that would be against your principles yes? But either way I don't really care, I've listened to enough bigoted meanderings from you. I'm fairly confident further correspondence from you will be more of the same. Life to live.”

“Martin, you're obviously a great admirer of Dawkins. I expect you have already changed your name to Mrs. Garrison and fantasise about things that are quite unspeakable in respectable company.
It is Dawkins who has made an argument with supporting evidence that is either non-existent, spurious, incorrect, or petty.
There is NO evidence to demonstrate that Muslims are responsible for hampering the teaching of evolution in UK schools. But saying it assures him of media coverage so he can flog more books.
You are right that I don't like him. I don't like him because he LIES to get attention. No real scientist would do that. For that he deserves contempt.
I notice you've mentioned *nothing* about my actual argument - that Dawkins is publicly and unfairly slating a minority group for cash - yet claim i am the one making petty arguments.
You're the one who is *avoiding* the argument here. Do you beleive Dawkins is right? Do you think that Muslims are running an anti-evolution campaign targeting UK schools?
I notice you have said very little about that other than lavish unconnected praise on how "well written" his books are.
Admit it... You work for his publisher don't you? Or you work for his PR firm? Or you have some other financial interest in seeing this nasty liar make even more money.
Why else would you heap praise upon his work whilst avoiding the arguments about his unwarranted and unfair attack on and lies about a minority group?”

“No Peter, you quite clearly stated Dawkins ideas. If you meant something else then you need to write more clearly.
I can only presume from the tone of your comments that you have a personal prejudice against Dawkins as your supporting evidence is either non existent, spurious,
incorrect, or petty.
Read the book. Its about evolution. Its well written. You might learn something.
If you don't like the man then fine, say so. Let me show you how its done-I don't like you. See? Its easy.”

“Martin - i think you are confusing me with a creationist. Perhaps so you are so desperate to defend The Dalai Dawkins that you accidentally misread what i wrote?
I did not questions Darwin's ideas. I questioned DAWKINS assertions, which i beleive to be incorrect, that the teaching of Evolution in British schools is hampered by a growing Muslim population.
He didnt say this because it is true. He said it because he knew it would get him column inches, because Muslims are a popular boogie man right now. I'm sure if we were living in the 50s he would have blamed communists. Anything to get some attention and line his pockets in the process.
He's a tabloid "scientist" who is desperate to make cash from his books. He is ungallantly and unfairly jumping on the latest minority-bashing bandwagon, and criticising a group that that the tabloids are vilifying right now which is bound to generate massive sales for his books so he can buy Lalla Ward a new wardrobe and shiny new car.
Bravo Dawkins! You've obviously learnt plenty about career advancement from the odious Nick Griffin.”

“you have based your argument on a few fallacies Peter.
Dawkins doesn't single out all Muslims for criticism.
Its not his idea, it was Darwin's
Its no longer an idea, its as close to fact as you can get.
The scientists that have helped gather the evidence include among their many thousands, Muslims.
Read the book.”
