Belgian motocross legend Stefan Everts repeated his 2004 win in the RHL Activities-organised Beach Enduro at Weston-super-Mare on Sunday.

The 10-times world champion, who retired two years ago to take up the post of race director at the KTM factory, finished two minutes and 12 seconds ahead of Scot Shaun Simpson, whose father Willie won the first-ever duel on the Somerset sands back in 1983.

They and Jamie Lewis, from Ferndale in South Wales, were the only riders to complete 18 laps in the three-hour marathon.

World and British Enduro ace David Knight and Kiwi Josh Coppins put Everts under pressure for most of the race but, despite two refuelling stops on laps seven and 13, Everts quickly resumed the lead.

Coppins' pit stop on lap nine cost him several places and his challenge faded in the final hour.

Knight was just 53 seconds behind Everts after 15 laps going into the last 30 minutes but he fell by the wayside on the very next lap and his pit staff remained tight-lipped regarding his demise.

Having his final outing on a Molson-Kawasaki prior to joining the CCM factory for 2009, Marshfield's Tom Church must have been very satisfied with his fifth-place finish after having been delayed at the start of the event and almost last away.

Knight was clocked at 95mph down the straight from the massed start but it was Everts who was first to appear, with Knight, Coppins, Marc de Reuver, Ashley Greedy, Paul Edmonson and six-times former winner of the event Rob Meek hot on his heels – but, on completion of the second lap, Everts was already 38 seconds ahead.

Knight and Coppins reduced Everts's advantage on the third and fourth laps and, at the first hour mark, Simpson had moved up to fourth place after he had shaken off the attentions of Greedy, Lewis, Brad Anderson, de Reuver and world 250cc motocross champion Tyla Rattray.

Knight and Coppins hit the front when Everts took on more fuel on lap seven but he retaliated by setting the fastest lap of nine minutes 36 seconds to regain the lead.

Knight went ahead again when Everts refuelled on lap 13, at which time Church had moved up to eighth.

Everts, however, was back in front on the 14th and from that point on he never looked back.

Elated at his success, Everts said: "Sure, I will be back next year to make it three. Today's race seemed to be less difficult than the 2004 one – but today the conditions are perfect."

Wessex Centre rival champion Colin Crease was back at his brilliant best in the West Wilts club's Errington Cup event at Easterton Sands, near Devizes, where he finished seven marks up on South West Centre challenger Ben Bramwell over four laps of a dozen sections in Folly Woods.

Bramwell outshone his rivals in the ninth section, where a long climb over tree roots cost him nine marks to Crease's 11. Craig Talbot and John Luff both added 14 to their totals in the same section.

Crease, however, lost less marks than his rivals in the sixth, seventh and last sections.
