The Evening Post again honoured grassroots football when the senior star men took a bow at the Fry Club.

A total of 33 players were honoured for their outstanding displays over the last season.

And this year marked the 40th anniversary of the start of the Star Man feature in the Evening Post and on Tuesday night the latest group to win an award were rewarded.

The winners, selected from the Evening Post Star Match every weekend throughout the season, turned out in force to collect their awards.

The presentations were made by former Rovers defender Trevor Challis and former City striker Marvin Brown, both of whom now run a soccer coaching school.

Challis said: "It was great to see so many players being rewarded – and I know there are some good quality players in these leagues, so it is good that they gain recognition for their skills."

Brown added: "So much good comes out of being part of a team which plays in all these leagues. Friendships are made and camaraderie forged by all those who take part.

"The Star Man awards are great in helping to foster a good team spirit."

Vernon Windell, Gloucestershire County Football Association official, said: "On behalf of the football leagues, clubs and players, I would like to thank the Evening Post for putting on such a wonderful evening.

"To think that this event has been going on for 40 years shows just how important these awards are.

"We are thankful to the Evening Post for their continued support and coverage of the game in Bristol.

"The Star Match is an important feature of the weekly coverage of adult football."

Rob Perkins, Evening Post sports editor, said: "As a former local footballer myself I know just how important it is for players to be given recognition.

"It is great to be able to do this for the local community and we are now looking forward to the next 40 years."
