Lee Haskins is setting his sights on European domination after confirming his status as Britain's outstanding flyweight.

The 25-year-old Lockleaze fighter was back in Bristol today following his stunning fourth-round stoppage victory over Ross Burkinshaw in Sunderland on Friday night.

And having made a successful first defence of the British title he wrenched from Andy Bell in Wigan last November, Haskins is looking to establish his credentials on the continent.

Although a winner-takes-all showdown with Commonwealth super-fly boss Don Broadhurst represents an attractive proposition, promoters Chris and Jamie Sanigar favour an assault on the European Boxing Union title, which is currently vacant.

Frenchman Christophe Rodrigues is booked to meet Italian Andrea Sarritzu for the title at a still-to-be-determined venue in September – and Haskins, rated number two by the EBU, wants to fight the winner.

Bristol Boys gym spokesman Jamie Sanigar said: "Europe is our preferred route at this moment in time. Lee has seen off three of the leading British contenders in his last three fights and is now ready to move to pastures new.

"He's proved himself in this country and he's already won a Commonwealth title at flyweight. Europe is something new and winning the EBU title would be a significant entry on his CV."

Managed by Frank Warren, Birmingham-based Broadhurst, unbeaten in 11 paid outings, represents the biggest domestic threat to Haskins, who has lost only twice in 20 fights.

Sanigar added: "We'll be happy to take that fight if the EBU make us wait until next year. But we've already lobbied the EBU and we're pushing for Lee to box the winner of the Rodrigues-Sarritzu match-up. He's earned his ranking and that means he's next in line."

Haskins produced his most impressive performance for some time to halt Burkinshaw in the main event on Friday's Sky Sports bill at Seaburn.

Sanigar added: "Lee has a new-found confidence and is ready to move on to bigger and better things."

Meanwhile, Bristol's Danny Butler is considering an offer to challenge English middleweight champion Darren McDermott on Ricky Hatton's first Sky TV show at the Manchester Velodrome on September 25.
