England reach World Cup finals
1925: Eileen Joel, daughter of millionaire racehorse owner Jim Joel, became the first female jockey to win an 'open' race when she won the four-mile Town Plate at Newmarket on Hogier. The race, which dates back to 1665, featured five women in the field of eight jockeys.
1996: England Under-21s' 0-0 draw with Poland at Molineux was delayed by two hours because of a suspect package, which turned out to be a sandwich.

David Beckham was sent off as England beat Austria to reach the 2006 World Cup
2001: Leicester appointed Dave Bassett as manager, with Micky Adams leaving Brighton to become his assistant. In April 2002 Bassett moved upstairs to a director of football role and Adams became manager.
2005: England qualified for the 2006 World Cup finals despite captain David Beckham becoming the first player in history to be sent off twice for the national team. Sven Goran Eriksson's side beat Austria 1-0 and Holland beat the Czech Republic to guarantee England's place.
2006: Hull KR beat Widnes 29-16 in the National League One Grand Final at Warrington to secure promotion to Super League after a 12-year top-flight absence.
2007: Crystal Palace sacked manager Peter Taylor after collecting just 10 points from their opening 10 matches in the Coca-Cola Championship.
