El Shorbagy makes it three-in-a-row
SQUASH: UWE squash star Mohamed El Shorbagy has claimed the England Under-19s title for a third successive year.
Rising star El Shorbagy, pictured, who celebrates his 19th birthday today, battled through the qualifying rounds to set up a final clash with fellow Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad in the final at the Sheffield Institute of Sport last week.
And El Shorbagy, who is the youngest elite professional on the circuit with a world ranking of 14, took just 52 minutes to secure a 11-9, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9 victory.
The former Millfield School pupil is studying for a degree in Mechanical Engineering after being awarded a full scholarship on the Elite UWE programme.
Richard Bennett, from UWE's Centre for Sport, said: "Mohamed's continued success at the British Open during the first year of his degree is testament to his commitment to combine both training and studying."
El Shorbagy is now preparing for a professional event in New York before his debut in the British University Individual Squash Championships in Birmingham next month.
