Bath City 1 Basingstoke Town 0: Bath City, looking to avenge their 1-0 defeat at The Camrose last month, were rewarded with a goal after just seven minutes which came from an impressive four-man move, yet it proved to be the only bright moment of what was otherwise a lacklustre match.

The move started with captain Jim Rollo playing the ball from the halfway line to Gethin Jones on the right. Jones pushed the ball forwards to Sekani Simpson, who whipped in a penetrating cross to the far post, where Darren Edwards had a simple tap-in.

At that point it looked as if City would run rampant over a hesitant Town defence, and they should have added to their total 10 minutes later. From a City corner Stuart Douglas crept in at the near post but saw his shot deflected behind for another corner, which was easily cleared.

From that moment on Bath dominated the remainder of the first half but they never looked likely to add to their opener. In the second period, with the visitors packing their defence and attempting to catch City on the break, Bath struggled to even have a shot on goal.

Twice Basingstoke broke away down the right with the pace of Sam Tucknott threatening to cause Rollo problems.

Fortunately for City the final ball into the box left much to be desired. Yet in a game they looked likely to win at a canter early on, City were playing for time at the end as they struggled to keep an increasingly confident Basingstoke attack at bay.
