ST Peter's Hospice is without doubt one of Bristol's best loved and most cherished charities. In fact it is hard to imagine our city without it. And yet just over 35 years ago it was only an idea in the mind of its founder Joan Bourns.

But she established an organisation that Bristolians immediately understood and took to their hearts.

And few if any in this city have not known someone who has been helped by St Peter's.

Today after some difficult years when the charity seemed to lose some of its favour with local people, it is again on firm ground.

Under the leadership of Simon Caraffi this charity is in safe hands.

For he knows its history, realises its importance to Bristolians and wants not only to protect it but to nurture it and see it grow.

Its value is not simply in helping people whose lives are coming to an end but in supporting those who have been left behind. And in both areas St Peter's is supremely good.

An organisation, however well intentioned, is only as good as the people who run it.

In the case of St Peter's, its staff and volunteers are undoubtedly its greatest asset.

It has had a remarkable first 35 years and there will be many, many more to come.
