MAKE no mistake Bristol needs an arena. We have needed one for years. And were we to sit down and work out how much we have lost because of the bands and concerts that have passed us by because there was nowhere big enough for them to play it would be frightening.

We have all known for decades that we are missing out. But until now we have lacked someone willing to stand-up and genuinely fight for Bristol to get one.

We have had only councillors of varied abilities saying the right thing but achieving nothing and a now defunct quango which made promises it ultimately failed to deliver.

Now mayor George Ferguson is aiming to put all that right. As an architect he knows exactly what he is talking about. And as Bristol's elected leader he is passionate about getting things done.

Those who have dismissed the arena as a superficial project need to think again.

This will not only provide a important cultural venue for Bristol it will also bring hundreds of thousands more people ion the city every year.

That will mean a significant boost for the city's economy. So let's all support the mayor in his efforts to get it built.

“Roversteve, actually you read that wrong, I wasn't objecting, far from it, I was just saying that, more or less, that transport needs to be sorted out first. Pointless building an arena if people take ages to get to it.

    :-)”

“It's interesting and clear for all to see the difference in attitude between these first two posters. force4to5 has vision, positive outlook a degree of confidence in George's article whereas Robin1966 (clue is in the year) backward thinking, negative,(some doubters will say realistic),looking for things to go wrong refuses to see the bigger picture(just the bigger traffic,ah,yes that age old objection tool, the two outlooks that can shape the future of our great City of Bristol.Which one do you all prefer?”

“A multipurpose area should be a major design criteria for the project. As well as concerts it needs to be adaptable to sporting events, conferences & trade shows to maximise revenue. The development of integrated transport will relieve the car congestion - railway developments (P'head line, Henbury loop, electrification), a bus transport hub at TM - all of which are on the development plan. Add the Brunel mile 'plans' & the future looks very attractive. Cmon Briss.”

“Bring hundreds of thousands of people into the city every year? Oh yes, brilliant suggestion, so they can sit in a car for ages in a gridlocked city centre! Surely the first priority must be to sort the transport situation out so that people can actually move about. Bristol is the second most polluted city in the country, if we had a good transport system in the city the arena might be a good idea, but some thought has to be given to how people are actually going to get to it with the minimum of stress!”
