Dubai agony for Bristol's Prescott and Woodward
TWO amateur golfers from Bristol just missed out on the prestigious 2012 League to Dubai pairs' title in Dubai, finishing runners-up in a closely contested event.
John Woodward, a member of Manor House at Castle Combe, and Gary Prescott, who plays his golf at The Kendleshire, competed against four other pairs from across the UK in three rounds of Stableford golf on three of Dubai's top courses: the Wadi by Faldo Course at the Emirates Golf Club; Dubai Creek Golf Club; and the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Points were awarded according to daily placings.
The stunning, all-expenses-paid trip to the emirate – which included return flights and six nights' half-board accommodation at a five-star hotel – was reward for their initial efforts in battling their way through a local league and a regional final during 2012.
Woodward, a two-handicapper, and Prescott, who plays off 12, scored 405 points to finish 20 behind winners Chris Wall and Mark Green, from Middlesbrough GC.

Despite the disappointment of not winning, the duo were still able to smile after enjoying a fabulous overall experience.
Prescott, pictured above, said: "To come second is amazing, but really the main prize is just getting the chance to be here in the first place. The courses are all top notch and everything came together superbly. We came here to play golf – it wasn't a holiday, so we concentrated on playing as best we could and enjoy the setting and the conditions.
"Dubai Creek was out of this world, while we also enjoyed the great golf course at Meydan – it did seem unusual to be playing in short-sleeved shirts in January! The guys behind this event have been so helpful and friendly, while nothing has been a problem. It seems unbelievable now that you pay just £30 and you win a trip to play golf in Dubai.
"We'll definitely be in again for next year's event. We recommend it to everyone and until you get here you have no idea what you are missing out on by not entering. We've met some great people on this trip and while we know that the more people who enter means there is a less of a chance of us qualifying we have to tell all our friends, as this really is a chance of a lifetime."
Woodward, pictured, added: "It was our first time in Dubai and it was an absolutely fantastic experience. It is without doubt the best golf trip I have been on and I've played golf in Spain, Portugal, the USA and Ireland."
