Drunk Bristol teen set fire to moped
A drunken Bristol teenager ended up in court after "stupidly" stealing a moped.
Kurt Grist, 19, was walking with friends along Airport Road, Knowle, on July 23, when he saw a Peugeot Speedfight moped outside a house, Bristol magistrates heard.
Grist, of Wroughton Drive, Hartcliffe, stole the vehicle worth £925, took it to some grassland and tried to start it, prosecutor Laura Opie told the court. He failed and it was set on fire.
When police attended they saw a crow bar and a spanner by the group of six young men and women.
Grist, who does not even ride a moped, admitted stealing it but said one of the men had set it alight.
Mitigating, Nick Clough said: "It was stupid, it was an ill-conceived act in a state of inebriation."
Of the fire damage, he added: "Police knew from an early stage who it was and it certainly wasn't Mr Grist."
Magistrates passed a one-year community order with supervision and 150 hours of unpaid work.
They ordered Grist to pay £750 compensation to the moped's owner.
