A Bristol DJ has been jailed for seven years after being convicted of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply.

Tumaini Matsimela told Bristol Crown Court that £25,200 in cash that police found at his home in Wilson Street, St Paul's, was money he had made through music, not drugs.

Other occupants at the house Jumoke Matsimela 25, and Abiola Matsimela, 27, both admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Their brother Tumaini, 26, of the same address, denied possessing cannabis, cocaine and heroin with intent to supply.

Though he was cleared of cannabis possession on a judge's direction, a jury found him guilty of the more serious charges. The jury was then told he had previous convictions for possessing class A drugs with intent to supply.

Jailing Tumaini, Judge Michael Longman handed Jumoke a 40-week jail term, suspended for two years, and 180 hours' unpaid work. Abiola received a community order involving 150 hours' unpaid work.

Matsimela told the jury he worked as DJ Spiney and ran Keep It Movin' Promotions, staging dance events where he sold music CDs, DVDs and T-shirts.

He said he also did a weekly Tuesday night stint on Bristol radio station Passion FM.

He told the jury: "Police found £21,000 in my mum's wardrobe and that was mine.

"It came from DJ-ing and promoting, it was basically music.

"The £4,200 in my bedroom was mine; that came from one of my recent projects."

He also said he knew nothing about a razor blade or scales found in his room.

James Ward, prosecuting, told the jury police were struck by a "stench" of cannabis and found bags of vegetable matter, mobile phones, digital scales as well as more than £26,000 cash.

The jury was told several bags of cannabis were found in Jumoke's first floor rear bedroom, including a Tesco bag containing £2,391 worth.

There were also bags of vegetable matter found in Abiola's second floor rear bedroom said to have a street value of some £140 as well as digital scales and three mobile phones.

In Tumaini's bedroom police found bags containing cannabis with a street value of some £3,900 as well as digital scales and two mobile phones.

It was the prosecution's case a silver Prada bag, found to contain class A drugs, was thrown out of a back window of the house. The jury heard no DNA was found linking anyone to it, and Tumaini's fingerprints were not detected on the drugs.

Brendon Moorhouse, for Jumoke, said his client had diminished his once heavy cannabis use and had worked to gain qualifications.

Anna Vigars, for Tumaini, said she accepted the law required a lengthy sentence for her client, which would have a "profound effect on him".

Ramin Pakrooh, for Abiola, told the court his client had a low quantity of drugs and had no previous convictions.

All three men will be the subject of a confiscation hearing to reclaim proceeds of crime.
