A Kingsdown man who was banned from getting behind the wheel after deciding to drive to a nearby supermarket after he had been drinking told magistrates his actions were "stupid".

Anthony White, 46, of Little Paul Street, admitted driving a white Ford Fiesta along Alfred Place while more than twice the legal drink driving limit.

James King, prosecuting, said White was stopped by a policeman and roadside breath test showed he had 81mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Defending himself White said: "I have not been in trouble for a long time. It was a silly mistake. Hands up I should not have been driving. I just popped along to Somerfield which is not very far away. It was stupid, there is not a lot more I can say."

White received a 20-month driving ban, as fined £100 and ordered to pay £55 costs.
