An all-action sidecar final proved the highlight of the Somerton club's charity grass track meeting at Holbrook Park, on the outskirts of Wincanton.

Myles Simmons and Kevin Woodley, who were the leading qualifiers for the final from three point-scoring legs, were pre-event favourites, but they were pegged back into third place on the opening lap by fellow Cornishmen Andy Gribble and Nick Owen and Jamie Brea and Mark Truscott.

Simmons and Woodley managed to get past Brea and Truscott early on the second lap, but Gribble and Owen held them off until the last turn in the epic four-lap race and gained the judge's verdict by inches.

The two main solo finals resulted in wins for Charlie Saunders, from Minety in Wiltshire, and Hereford's Calvin Palmer. Saunders was top qualifier in the 500 open final, and true to form he quickly made his escape leaving Bristol's Rod Melksham and Isle of Wight speedway ace Harland Cook to dispute the minor positions.

Palmer was equally dominant in the upright engine final, leading from the front while in his wake Colin Harris and Richard Cooper rode shoulder to shoulder for most of the race.

Craig Drury from Kent dominated the 250cc event, which was decided over a number of point-scoring legs, and Penzance rider Lewis Leah showed that he is a star in the making by winning the 350cc class, also on points.

Bristol's John May leads the expert class in the Remedies Bar West Country Motocross Championship after winning two of the three second-round races at Landrake in Cornwall and finishing a close second in the other. May hurt his foot in the first race but still won by four seconds from Andrew Gillett, before going on to take the second race after Gillett had led the early stages. A fall prevented May from catching leader Seb Osborne in the third, but he still finished as runner-up.

Bristol's Joe Dark also won two races in the 125/250cc class. He was denied a hat-trick when Plymouth's Darren Shears won the second race by a four-second margin.
