Donald McCain has mixed fortunes at Exeter
Donald McCain had a mixed day at Exeter on Friday, with one winner thrown out yet returning to the winner's enclosure 35 minutes later.
McCain thought Glenwood Knight had made the long trip down south from his Cheshire yard pay dividends in the EBF "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle.
The five-year-old was having only his second start under rules, having finished second in a Hexham bumper on debut.
He was fighting out the finish with 2-1 favourite Dastardly Dick all the way up the straight and the two made contact on more than one occasion.
McCain's man on board was Jason Maguire and the jockey pulled his stick through to his left hand but could not stop his mount drifting left.
At the line Glenwood Knight had won by a head but a stewards' inquiry was called and the race was awarded to the Victor Dartnall-trained, Christian Williams-ridden gelding.
To make matters worse, Maguire was handed a two-day (19 and 21) ban for careless riding.
"I think before the last, the other horse has come in on us but the pair raced wide the whole way and Jason tried to get back to their original line," said McCain.
"How they can say the other horse was getting back up baffles me because we were going away at the line.
"I'm sure I'd have a different view if we were the runner-up but we've seen plenty of decisions like that that don't get changed."
Rosie All Over (9-2 joint-favourite) cheered up the handler with victory in the Exeter Racecourse Conference Centre Novices' Handicap Chase.
Dartnall had a double as Exmoor Ranger won at 8-11 in the Harry Dutfield Memorial Novices' Chase.
Franchoek finished third to Gary Moore's Lupanar in the Ilfracombe Foodservice Limited Handicap Hurdle.
