Don't tell us to get on our bikes
JON Rogers, one of the candidates for Mayor says "A lot of cycling on pavements is done carefully." He himself rides on pavements. To me and many others these are words of someone with no common sense. Pavements are for pedestrians. Cyclists apparently can ride across zebra crossings and through traffic lights when they are red and they never get reprimanded by the police.
I came out of Mogfords Hardware shop in Westbury-on-Trym last Thursday afternoon with my handicapped daughter, Jane, straight into the path of a middle-aged cyclist who was on the pavement and had to swerve to avoid hitting us. He was not wearing a helmet and did not apologise for almost knocking us over. He cycled on down the pavement behind an elderly lady who was using two sticks. She was completely unaware of his existence. He was impatient to get past her and swerved from side to side until he managed to squeeze past and cycle over the zebra crossing. If he had knocked any of us over he would not have been fined.
Jon Rogers was given an award for being such a Green councillor because he rides his bicycle all over Bristol. We can't all get on a bicycle. He has quickly forgotten all the people in the Care Homes and the Day Centres who are unable to ride a bicycle.
He is standing for mayor but we need, We need a business man with common sense for our mayor not a councillor who tells us to get on our bikes.

“If everyone cycled then you wouldn't be stuck in traffic coming into or out of town. If there were decent cycle lanes that kept people away from the dangerous traffic then no-one would cycle on the pavement.
You are bashing the wrong people.”

“Nothing like an excuse to jump on the "bash cyclists" bandwagon - but surely it's getting a bit tired by now ?
He was riding a bike, but he was simply a selfish idiot - you get them in cars and sometimes even pedestrians will barge you out of the way. I shouted at a middle-aged driver yesterday who went across a pedestrian crossing on a red light - and another one tailgated me down a residential street last week, horn blaring.
I don't know what significance the absence of a helmet has - it seems "red lights", "road tax" and "pavements" aren't quite enough ...there's no legal requirement for them, and there are plenty of responsible cyclists - including myself - who will fight any moves to make them compulsory.”
