Door-to-door canvassers are visiting Bristol homes to urge people to return their electoral registration forms.

The forms will ensure that eligible adults will be listed on the 2010 electoral roll and therefore able to vote at the next General Election.

So far, 187,000 registration forms have been sent out to households across the city.

A further 87,000 reminders have been sent out to get people to send back their forms.

Canvassers will be visiting 55,000 homes to urge people to register.

Yvonne Dawes, Bristol's Statutory Services Manager, said: "We have over 120 canvassers who have been specially trained to carry out this important task.

"We know there will be a general election in 2010 and local elections too, but you can only vote if your name is on the electoral roll."

In addition to the canvassers, there are now four easy ways to get on the electoral roll:

● Text the unique 14 digit number on your registration form to 80212

● Internet registration at www.registerbyinternet.com/bristol

● Telephone 0800 1973059 ● Post completed registration forms back to the council.

The closing date for registration is November 27, 2009.

Last year, a total of 92 percent of all eligible adults registered to vote.

This figure represented a six percentage points increase on the previous year's figure of 86 percent.
