The UK jazz scene is always ready for the Next Big Thing and, when it's been decided what that is, it will generally be around until the next Next Big Thing comes along.

In the recent past it happened with Polar Bear's electro-acoustic experimentation and latterly the energetic group improvisations of Phronesis. The way things are shaping up right now, however, it looks like we should all be watching Troyka.

At first sight this incendiary organ/guitar/drums trio looks like a run-of-the-mill jazz/rock outfit but once let loose, it's clear we're dealing with something altogether bigger and better than that. The music on their latest album, Moxxy, takes in all kinds of influences, from the dreamy Bill Frisell-like restraint of Rest to Crawler's Zeppelin-recalling rockout. Kit Downs uses his Hammond sound sparingly at times, leaving space for Chris Montague to work his guitar into tight-clenched riffs or apoplectic frenzies and letting Joshua Blackmore work things out on the drums.

The music is full of excitement and yet it all feels totally under control, like curious scientists probing and modifying, knowing they are on the verge of a major discovery. Which, it turns out, they are.
