Don't miss RIOT at Bristol Old Vic Studio
The Wardrobe Ensemble (made up of ex-members of Bristol Old Vic's ever-fertile Young Company) reprise their "thoroughly modern musical tragedy" inspired by the 2005 riots outside a London IKEA store. At midnight on the 10 February 2005, a new branch of IKEA opened in Edmonton. Prices were slashed to attract custom – and some 6,000 people stormed the doors.
Making use of eye-witness testimonies, Wardrobe's devised piece charts the ensuing riot, mainly from the point of view of the hapless "Yellow Tops", a mix of stalwart IKEA staff and a herd of barely trained auxiliaries. In a filmic collage of action, the ensemble play not only the store's staff but also the mass of shoppers fighting tooth and nail to bag bargains. The Ensemble promise an "epic tale of violence, greed, and cheap sofas… asking what pushes civilised people to riot out of want, not need."
