No-one could match the performance of Jason Hamblin in the North Somerset Club's hour-long timed and observation trial for the Sage Electrical Trophy at Backwell Hill, near Lulsgate, on Sunday.

He was first of an entry of more than 50 to complete the eight-lap contest in Scars Wood and he lost fewer marks on observation than his rivals.

In fact, he lost out in only two sections – three of his marks went on a cambered climb over tree roots in the fifth and he lost a dozen in the fourth, where an S-bend climb over tree roots and leaf mould proved difficult.

Runner-up Peter King finished hot on Hamblin's heels, but he lost nine marks in the third section, which featured a descent over slippery banks and roots, and 20 others elsewhere.

Former national champion Steve Saunders was a clear winner of the Knut Cup trial, which was staged by the Bath and Wilts Border clubs in woodland just off the A46 north of Bath.

Saunders lost just 14 marks in three laps of 18 sections – nine of them went in the ninth and 10th, which were designated for experts only. He lost two more in the third section and three in the sixth.

Behind him, five marks separated Craig Talbot and 15-time Wessex champion Colin Crease, neither of whom could match Saunders on the sixth, ninth and 10th sections.

Jason Atwell, from Street, in Somerset, was outstanding in the Clubman Expert class on a slightly easier route with nine single-mark penalties in five sections.
