Dismay at decision

I READ the news of the Avonmouth power station approval with a very heavy heart – and on Valentine's Day too.

Bio-fuel power-generation as a "green" solution has to be one of the largest cons forced upon us in recent years.

This Government promised to be the "greenest" one in history. The over-riding of our local council decision is a travesty; the coalition sings the praises of "localism" and "small government" yet imposes its will where it desires – this time to devastating results.

Focussing simply on the local effect to the environment is probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Global carbon dioxide levels are consistent worldwide and it matters not where they are released.

Britain has an abundance of wind energy available and should be investing in the long-term stability of a pan-European Super-Grid – yet the long term profits of bio-fuel are again put before the needs of planet and people.

I will certainly continue to strongly oppose this decision and hope the people of Bristol will too.

“Poets priests and politicians have words to thank for their positions.

Hence the heavy use of quotation marks in this letter.

I don't know when the word green became a superlative adjective but it is conveniently nebulous, almost to the point of being meaningless.

In politics, one party's green is another party's greener or greenest. Pretty meaningless. The Government obviously consider a bio-fuel power station to be green. The Green Party disagree.

It's like car manufacturers claiming their car to be green. It is a word that is only true of the car's colour. A car is just a massive use of Earth's resources. I've no problem with that, but attaching the term green to it is purely a marketing gimmick, possibly salving the conscience of the driver who buys it.

Bio-fuel power generation allows the Government to salve their conscience and possibly win votes from those who are easily hoodwinked.”

“What's that got to do with a "saint's" day created to make money by the greeting's card industry?”
