Disappointing closing rounds for Nailsea golfer Wood in US PGA
Nailsea golfer Chris Wood's week at the US PGA Championship ended in frustration and disappointment after his weekend rounds left him tied 76th and a long way short of his British Open performance.
Struggling with minor injury worries all week, as well as a cold putter, Wood shot final rounds of 77 and 79 at Hazeltine GC in Minneapolis after making the cut in his first tournament on American soil and only his second major as a professional.

"It's been a week to forget really, a funny week because I didn't feel I got into the tournament at all," said the 21-year-old. "To make the cut in my first major in America was a mental battle and I'm proud that I did that, but it took a lot out of me. In the end, to get experience in America is only going to help me later on, especially if I can get things like jetlag right next time."
Wood complained of sleeping poorly and also muscle spasms in his back brought on by tight hamstrings. But he was not letting the problems make excuses for him, adding: "I tried my best on every hole, but I just didn't enjoy it on Saturday at all and I haven't felt right all week."
Wood's weekend rounds included just five birdies, but he also suffered four double bogeys. "I lost too many shots on the par-fives and that knocked my confidence," he said.
The only double bogey to remember was on his penultimate hole yesterday, when a loose tee shot landed two feet from a water hazard and he chose to don his waterproofs to avoid a soaking.
When he eventually removed his waterproof trousers, the huge galleries caused him to smile. "It's nice to get a few screams and whistles from girls," said Wood.
But he admitted that even on Saturday he was looking forward to returning home.
He added: "I can't wait to play in Holland next week in more familiar surroundings. There were a lot of reasons that I didn't play well here this week, but I'll be back; I've got the Masters to look forward to next year."
Wood's American experience was probably summed up when he flew into Minneapolis International Airport five days before the tournament began. Customs officials questioned his visa and would not believe that he was playing in the US PGA. They detained him for 45 minutes before asking him further questions and then releasing him.
"It was a bit of a shock, a strange welcome to America," he said. "When I told them I was in the tournament, they didn't believe me, so it wasn't great and I don't want that experience again."
