Junior rugby: Dings Crusaders Colts 35 St Mary's Colts 0: Dings Colts marched into the next round of the National Cup, scoring five unanswered tries against traditional rivals St Mary's in a fiercely-contested derby at Lanseer Avenue.

With nothing to choose between the two packs, the outcome was decided by the razor-sharp Dings back-line with the centre pairing of James Oakley and Dan Cole creating havoc in the Saints' defence.

The midfield duo complemented each other perfectly with the elusive running skills of Oakley in contrast to the sheer power and physical presence of his centre partner, Cole.

Mary's had their moments with their back-row trio of Josh Goddard, William Forster-Grundy and Josh Creed putting in solid performances and Liam Clayton in impressive form at scrum-half, but they were unable to break down the home side's defence.

St Mary's coach Sean O'Rielly said: "They were a well-drilled side and they broke us down a few times.

"They (Dings) kept coming at us and it was just a case of defend, defend, defend.

"We played the last 10 minutes with 14 men, which doesn't help when you're playing against a good side like that."

Dings opened their account in the seventh minute when from a catch and drive, flanker George Sparrow, who was celebrating his 18th birthday, emerged with the ball for the opening try.

Fly-half Lewis Blackwell, who had a perfect day off the kicking tee, landing five from five conversions, added the extras. On the 20-minute mark, hooker Joe Hawksby was involved in a carbon copy catch and drive to extend the lead.

Dings took control of the second quarter, sending their big runners into the heart of the defence. Lock Kai Berg made several rampaging runs, as did Cole, who often needed three defenders to bring him down.

Dean Hunt was again in outstanding form at No 8 for Dings, but it was Oakley who crossed in the 37th minute to collect his first of two tries after his angled run split the defence and allowed him to canter in.

Saints had their best period of the match in the third quarter, keeping the home side at bay and enjoying the lion's share of possession.

Crusaders wing Josh Robbins raced in on 60 minutes.

Then Oakley grabbed his second try in the closing moments after his determined 40-metre run ended under the posts.

Dings coach Alex Guest said, "We spoke at half-time about off-loading more out of the tackle.

"It's the players making the decisions about how we want to play and all we do as coaches is try to teach them the skills."
