Emily Diamond reinforced her case for inclusion in the Great Britain team to compete at the European Junior Championships in Serbia next month by winning two medals at the weekend trials.

The first wave of selections will be announced this week, with the second batch after the Sainsbury's English Schools' Championships on July 10-11th – and Diamond did her cause no harm with two superb runs in the England Athletics Under-23 and Under-20 Championships at Bedford.

With the strains and stresses off A-levels now behind her, the 18-year-old Bristol & West AC athlete won a silver in the 200 metres and a bronze in the 100m.

"I'm very happy with that," said Diamond. "I got what I wanted, namely to run inside the qualifying times for the Europeans, and hopefully I have done enough to get a place in the 200m, which is my main event."

In the heats of the 100m on Saturday, Diamond equalled her personal best of 11.80secs, but hopes of a PB in the final were frustrated by a strong headwind.

It was a similar story in Sunday's 200m. Diamond breezed through the heats in a time of 24.07secs, a legal PB that matched a windy 24.07 earlier in the season. Her first sub-24 seconds time looked likely in the final but again the wind undermined those hopes and she had to settle for 24.12secs

"Perhaps I'll break 24 seconds for the first time in the Europeans," added Diamond. There is no doubt she can do that and hopefully selection for her first international tournament will give her the stage to prove it.

Only a small number of athletes made the journey to Bedford and 21-year-old Ruth Mitchell was rewarded with a PB of 2mins 12.21secs, clipping over a second off her 2008 best mark to finish seventh in the Under-23 800m final.

Bristol & West AC's Cameron Walker-Shepherd, who last week was selected for the European Youth Olympics, was below his best in the pole vault and finished ninth with 4.55m.

Westbury-on-Trym international sprinter Ryan Scott, who is now training in London, was sixth in the final of the Under-23 men's 100m in a time of 10.55secs.
