Derek McInnes: Bristol City have the firepower to stay in the Championship

Bristol City boss Derek McInnes insists his current crop of strikers can score the goals needed to secure npower Championship safety between now and the end of the season.

Last month's sale of eight-goal top-scorer Nicky Maynard to promotion-chasing West Ham United threatens to leave the Robins short of firepower in their fight against relegation.

David Clarkson has been ruled out for the rest of the season after fracturing his ankle, Ryan Taylor has only just made his comeback from long-term injury and McInnes has spoken of the need to recruit a goal-scoring forward.

Although the Scot is looking to bring in another striker now that the window for loan deals has reopened, he yesterday reaffirmed his belief that Brett Pitman, Jon Stead and Chris Wood – the only three strikers currently available for first team selection – can score the goals to see City to safety.

He said: "We have three strikers here who I feel will all score goals.

"They will certainly be given the opportunity to do just that in the coming weeks and I'm confident we have enough to be okay.

"That said, it remains to be seen if we will miss NIcky Maynard. It would be foolish to say otherwise at this stage.

"We have good strikers here already and we will have to see how they get on."

Recalling last Saturday's 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Leeds, he added: "It concerns me slightly that we were the better team in the first half but did not score when we were on top.

"I think the attitude and commitment of the players was spot on, but we should have made more of some of the situations we created and they have to be a bit more clinical."

Pitman boasts a respectable goal-scoring record for City; he finished last season as leading scorer with 13 and has netted three times in five starts this term.

Signed from West Brom on loan until the end of the season, New Zealand striker Wood also boasts a decent record in the Championship, having found the net on 11 occasions while on loan at Birmingham during the first half of this season. He has one goal in four games for City so far.

Stead has been troubled by injury for much of the season and, deprived of first team opportunities, has yet to register a goal.

Taylor has only just recovered from a foot injury.

McInnes would prefer to have four strikers available at all times and he is pressing ahead with plans to replace Maynard on a short-term basis.

But he warned: "It is difficult to sign a goal-scorer at this stage of the season.

"It is very difficult in January, because you invariably have to pay top dollar. And it is also difficult to bring one in on loan, because clubs are reluctant to let good players go out in February and March.

"My priority is to bring in a defender, but we are also looking for another striker, although it is less pressing."

City have launched a special ticket offer for season card holders and their friends in a bid to boost attendance at next Tuesday's npower Championship fixture against Crystal Palace at Ashton Gate.

Season card holders will be entitles to bring along as many friends as they like at the bargain price of £10 each. The offer extends to all areas of the ground subject to availability.

Robins commercial director Kevin Smith said: "This is part of our continued drive to remove restrictions and barriers to purchasing tickets at Ashton Gate.

"We want to add as much value for our season card holder and from the feedback we've had, we know there are some who are keen to bring friends along."

“OK Frank, point taken. I didn't read your post properly, and see that you were on about maybe a QUAILTY PLAYER (Young like Caulker) that we may be able to get in and
and pay some of their wages. If so GREAT.

You say when am I going to convince another 10,000 fans to get down Ashton, well it's not up to me, or you, or probably any other fan, as you may get another 5 or 6 people to go, but that's it, it's up to SL. I've talked about this for years and years, but rubbish on the pitch! (the PART TIME FANS turn up once and we lose, they are not coming back) If for once SL spent a packet (pennies to him but he wants to get us in TOP FLIGHT LOL) on GOOD QUALITY PLAYERS IN THE CORRECT POSITIONS THAT WE NEED, then the part timers would hear 'Have You seen that we've spent 3 million in total on a Centre Back, a Midfielder that can pass, and a forward (who knows we have some ambition!) who can score, then MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, we might get some more fans interested and more Bums on seats. We have for all our Donkey Cup finals, so why not now! GOOD PLAYERS FIRST, THEN FANS ON SEATS!

We won't get the fans first to get the cash to buy the QUALITY PLAYERS, the fans will come when the QUALITY PLAYERS have been bought in advance!

How much of "my hard earned" do I hand to the club, loads! I can't go as much now due to work, but went to over 40 games a season without fail for 20 years plus!
You worry about SL (Shakes Head!) and money growing on trees. DON'T! SL is a very clever and nearly a Billionaire, so we won't go bust LOL, and forget about any money growing on trees for gawd sake. So unless he wakes up about getting in some QUALITY PLAYERS! NOPE! L1 HERE WE COME I'M AFRAID, and when SL works out the cash he's lost due to us going down to L1, and the cash he could of spent keeping us UP, then sorry SL you don't get it do you!”

    “Monty_109.
I'm talking about £10,000+ a week for a loan player, hoping that the player's club would chip in a bit. I know that it's small beer by today's inflated standards, but in case it's slipped your notice, City are losing money each week now!
When you are able to convince another 10.000 of your fellow Bristolians to get down to Ashton every other week, you might just be entitled to comment about the depth of SL's pockets. As it is, how much of your hard earned are you willing to hand to the club, month on month?
And if you object to my calling Mr. L's money "hard earned", do you think he finds it growing on trees?”

“I put the headline "Bristol City have the firepower to stay in the Championship" into an internet translation site and it came back with "Reality Check: Getting a Decent Championship Level Striker in Feb is going to be VERY hard".

I sincerely hope the three do well because they deserve a chance. Having Clarkson and Taylor out is extremely unfortunate.”

More likely, to get a decent seasoned midfielder in would probably cost upwards of £250,000 until the end of the season and unless it absolutely guarantees staying in the Championship, is that really cost effective?

LOL - £250,000 what on another Pub Player. More like 1.5 Million Frank - Wake up, we're not in the 80's anymore. Steve L has messed up big time with not getting in any players in the transfer window. He could have spent a bit on some quality players say 3 million (Pennies to SL) which would have seen City stay up. Now we have to try and do that with this squad of muppets or maybe some LOAN PLAYERS, THE PLAYERS THAT CAN'T GET IN THEIR OWN TEAMS, why is that LOL. (Caulker was a one off by the way)
L1 Next season I'm afraid! Back where we deserve to be with our stingy Transfer and Wage Policy. The bloke is loaded yet spends nothing on players! (Oh and before you start spouting off about don't you know how he puts in 12 million a year etc etc, well what's the point if we've got rubbish on the pitch!) You really don't get it do you! Look at the table and which teams are at the top, oh the ones that spend money on what actually MATTERS! Yes THE PLAYERS! Forget about that bit did we.”

Yes you're right, it has been a long standing problem. And even in the case of Hartley, he didn't really settle down here.
But the situation being what it is, I don't think that we are going to see any long term movement on the transfer front until the summer. So unless we are extremely lucky enough to get a short term experienced midfielder cheaply, we are stuck with what we've got.
More likely, to get a decent seasoned midfielder in would probably cost upwards of £250,000 until the end of the season and unless it absolutely guarantees staying in the Championship, is that really cost effective?
We ought to be able to struggle through without that expenditure as long as we don't get any serious injuries.”

“Taker your point about Messi, frankclack, but hopefully you get my meaning- Elliott has been noticable by his absence but the problem has been there long before that. I agree about someone who can boss midfield. I know he wasnt everyones favourite, but Paul Hartley fitted this role well for me.Someone who could stop the game, look up and create something out not a lot”

    “gdknac.
Adomah is a growing talent, but hardly a midfielder. And the problem over the last few weeks is that Elliott has been missing. He seems to me to be the lynch pin.
When we are able to get a settled side on the pitch for more than a couple of weeks running we may see a difference.
But I still think that we need a "boss" in the side, someone who by strength of character and example, can drive the others on.
    As to Messi.
With him up front we really could play "one up" .............. and he wouldn't need "service".
    Is he available?”

“We seem to have to play one up front, so that 5 can be used in midfield. When we play 4-4-2 we appear to allow teams to over run us, which makes us vulnerable- I therefore understand the need to buid from the back.
What I dont really understand, is looking at the midfield, individually, there doesnt appear to be a problem. Adomah would be first choice in a lot of sides,Elliott and Cisse have good qualities and then there is a choice between Pearson and Kilkenny and as back up either Bolasie/Woolford/Skuse- It wouldnt appear that there is an identifyable weak link, yet put together there is a need to play 5- Could it really be that Cisse is more protecting the back 4, and that is moreso where the problem lies.
The lack of goals also would point to a lack of creativity, so even if Messi was upfront,a service is still necessary.”

“Firepower! In the last 11 games we have failed to score in SEVEN games. In those 11 games we have played the bottom three sides and managed a total of 2 goals against these bottom sides.

Chris Wood came here with a good scoring record this season, on loan to B'ham City, but he was not played there as a lone striker.

I fear for the rest of the season if something is not done by way of new players in key positions and a change of tactics.”

“i made the point a couple of weeks back that city haven't had a proven 'striking partnership' - like goater / cramb or peacock / thorpe - for several seasons now.

we've had all sorts of formations trotted out which have, in some cases, meant a reliance on a lone striker. stead was outstanding doing this before he got injured.

we've also not had a goal scoring midfielder thats reached double figures since - i think - scott murray. a lot of that was down to the passes from brian tinnion, who hasn't been acceptably replaced either. david noble and nick carle came closest, but gary johnson didn't 'trust' them enough.

we saw mcfadzean of crawley in the cup game. are city looking at this player, and going to bid?

i think everything now links to if we stay up, and. given the number of players exiting in the summer, who mcinnes brings in”
