Decision with no regard for the effect

IT HAS been on the cards for a while but now we know the date it will start. From October 23 we will all have to start paying to park on city centre streets on Sundays and Bank Holidays. So in the midst of a recession, at a time when people need all the encouragement they can get to come into the city centre and spend money and on the very days when more people will have free time than any others the city council has decided to penalise them.

They are doing this because they can, because it will bring them in some extra cash but it may well put people off coming into our city centre.

The city council should be doing all it can to encourage more people into the centre of Bristol on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Instead it has given people another reason to think twice or worse still stay away.

If nothing more, the opportunity to park for nothing on Sundays and Bank Holidays gave people a respite from being constantly targeted simply because they drive a car.

There are many people finding life extremely tough at the moment and the last thing they need is to see parking charges forced up.

You hear politicians talk a lot about joined-up thinking. Well this is the opposite. It is narrow, segmented thinking with no regard for the effect.
