Decision on Bristol Rovers' stadium due today
Bristol Rovers are due to find out today whether the final barrier to the club building a new stadium has been removed.
As reported in The Post the club is planning to push ahead with plans for a new stadium after Sainsbury’s was granted permission to build a supermarket at the club’s current ground.

What the new Bristol Rovers stadium at UWE could look like
The only thing that could still stop or delay the scheme would be if it was “called in” by the Eric Pickles – the minister for Communities and Local Government.
Bristol Rovers were expecting to hear last month on whether the planning application will get the go-ahead from Mr Pickles but the decision has been delayed twice.

Despite the delay the club is still confident that the scheme will be backed by Mr Pickles.
Bristol City Council has voted to allow the redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium in Horfield which in turn paves the way for the club to build a new £40 million stadium at Stoke Gifford.
Work is expected to start on the new home for the club in the summer and the new stadium will be ready in time for the 2015/16 season.
The new 21,700-seat stadium, which will be built on land owned by the University of the West of England, was given planning permission last year by South Gloucestershire councillors.
The club needs the money from the sale of the current ground to the supermarket chain in order to help fund the cost of the new stadium.
Tricia Thorpe, from Traders And Residents Against Sainsbury’s Horfield (Trash), have said the new store would lead to shop closures, unemployment, loss of consumer choice and “the devastation of a high street that is known across the country for its charm and variety of independent shops”.

“I'm sorry, Mr Pickles is unavailable, he's at lunch - for about the last six months, by the size of him.”

“@ Brennus
Try to grasp the facts.
Its a Memorial Ground, bought and dedicated as such by the people, long dead, who paid into the fund and volunteered their services to see it built as such for all time.
Nothing you argue alters the facts; nobody you speak for are here to answer for what you want and in their absence you should simply honour the legacy they intended.
Such is the love of sport, and of the ground and club that up to fifty people have had their ashes scattered or intered around the perimeter of the pitch over the years. Do you thing they would have been so keen to do this if they though their fellow fans would sell them out to a Supermarket?
Are you going to speak for them too ?”

“Don't like the design, just like all the other lifeless bowls recently been built.
Sort it out before it is too late.
Just look at Cardiff to realise design mistakes”

“I should have a quiet word with Steve Landsdown Markthat as he is the one determined to take the rugger to Trashton and beyond.”

“I see, Markthis.
So one can only remember the sacrifices that previous generations made if there's a game of rugby underway? Or if there's a rugby ground on the site?
What arrant tosh.
The memorial gates will be retained and put in a memorial garden. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to remember and appreciate the sacrifices my grandfather made without 30 burly men rolling around in the mud nearby.
You sir are howling into the wind. But do carry on if it makes you feel better.”

“Markthis - that's not a planning consideration.”

“More importantly, it is a Memorial Ground, bought and paid for by Bristolian's as a permanent and lasting memorial to the 300 or more rugby players who lost their lives in the Great War.
The ground without sport is like a brass plaque without the bench to sit on; pointless, worthless, a desecrated memorial which we should value above all other things.”
