John Hogan has returned to Bristol, less than three years after throwing his six-year-old son to his death from a hotel balcony.

The Evening Post has learned that the 35-year-old is staying at Callington Road Hospital in Brislington.

The £35 million NHS psychiatric hospital, next to Callington Road nature reserve, opened three years ago.

The 122-bed hospital is one of the biggest mental health projects in the country, built using the private finance initiative (PFI).

Patients from the former Barrow Hospital, which it replaced, are accommodated there and have en-suite bedrooms. There are therapy facilities including individual and group counselling areas, a gym, arts areas and kitchens for use in occupational therapy.

The hospital has a number of specialist units for patients with different mental health problems and each has a garden.

It is run by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, which refused to confirm or deny whether the former Bradley Stoke tiler was a patient on Wednesday night.

A trust spokeswoman said: "We would not comment on whether a person was or was not a service user."

Although the hospital is not rated as a secure unit there were security guards patrolling near the site on Wednesday.

Residents of Lane's End, in a quiet estate on the opposite side of Callington Road from the hospital, expressed mixed views.

Mother-of-two Kate Bertuca, 28, said: "I don't think it is right if he is able to come and go as he pleases."

A father-to-be, who did not want to be named, said: "This is not the best news in the world. But I suppose there is not a lot we can do about it."

Ashley James, 20, who lives with his parents, said: "I am not too concerned about it. He has to go somewhere, and we have never had problems with patients before."

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I'm not really bothered. I think he would be watched carefully by staff."

Hogan, who used to live in Dewfalls Drive, Bradley Stoke, flew back to Britain on Monday after being released from a Greek psychiatric hospital.

He threw his six-year-old son Liam to his death from a fourth floor hotel balcony while on holiday in Crete with his family on August 15, 2006.

He then jumped from the balcony himself, with his two-year-old daughter Mia.

Wheatfield Primary School pupil Liam suffered massive head injuries and died shortly afterwards. Hogan and Mia suffered broken limbs and recovered.

Hogan spent 16 months in the Dafni-Attica Psychiatric Hospital on the edge of Athens after being cleared of murdering his son in late January last year.

Hospital authorities said that he was "completely well" and free to fly home at any time after a court ruled he would not be a risk to himself, fellow passengers or crew on the plane home.

During the hearing last month that paved the way for Hogan's return, his mother Josephine and sister Gabriele told an Athens court he would continue to receive medical attention when he came back.

They said he would receive "all the love the family can give him" – but relatives of his ex-wife described the decision to allow him to return home as "horrendous".

At his trial last year, a Greek court found Hogan was temporarily insane when he killed Liam, and cleared him of a murder charge. The court heard claims he suffered "an earthquake of psychosis" after his then wife Natasha told him she wanted a divorce.

Two months later at an inquest in Flax Bourton, Avon Coroner Paul Forrest recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.

This finding was overturned by two High Court judges who found Mr Forrest's verdict flawed. A second inquest will now be held.

Natasha, a nurse, has since remarried and started a new life in Australia with Mia.

“My thoughts are with Liam, his sister & mother. What Mr Hogan did is unforgiveable - he took his anger out on his own innocent child who had done nothing wrong. The best thing his ex wife could of done is move away and start a new life for her & her daughter. He deserves no sympathy whatsoever.”

“I just hate reading about the witch hunt against this man. Yes he did a wicked thing "in a moment of madness" but let us not forget that he was pushed to the brink. We heard during the court case how his ex wife told him she wanted a divorce and he knew she had already started another relationship. He must have felt "If I can't have them no-one else (including another man) will". Stupidly he lost it and his little boy died and his daughter was injured. He has to live with that for the rest of his days. However, it will not help his little girl for her mother's family to make death threats. Surely that is against the law. One day she will surely read about the case and draw her own conclusion. In the meantime she will grow up knowing she has a daddy somewhere. How cruel to deny her that. Two wrongs don't make a right. I hope Mr Hogan is helped to get well again and that he and his family can be reunited with Mia. His ex wife got married again with indecent haste in my opinion. This must haved caused Mia even more confusion.”

“If Mr Forest develops a mental illness will he then become known as Forest ? A story about what Post reporters get up to when they are not working may be less boring than an update on the whereabouts of Mr Hogan - then again.”

“Excellent post by Shane. The EP have obviously done nothing for the last two days apart from trying to track Hogan down.

Well done on your excellent investigative journalism. I expect the staff and families and service users at Callington Road are finding life even more difficult thanks to the newspaper.”

“It's good to know that there are at least a few people who understand mental illness... and it's sad to see that so many want to vent their spleen on someone who is in no fit state to defend himself.
The BEP is in the business of selling news so it's no surprise to see the constant items they print.
I hope that none of you ever end up in a hospital suffering with mental health issues... and if you do I hope I can stop myself from smirking at your misfortune.
    Leave the man in peace.”

“Dan, Dont you spout rubbish.. What makes you think he is coming back to Bristol for sympathy and why are we in Bristol more appalled by his behaviour. If Mr Hogan had lived in Birmingham say, would you find this a less sad story?”

    “Mark,

You might be correct, However please god wait until she is old enough to make that decision herself instead of somebody else. She has suffered enough.

More importantly, if this man is mentally ill, How can he be allowed to use the law to make so called rational decisions, Surely he can't have it both ways.”
