David Beckham himself might have been in Milan – but his football academy helped give nearly 100 Bristol children a boost to their confidence today.

Coaches from The David Beckham Academy teamed up with teenagers from City Academy in Lawrence Hill to organise the day for two Bristol primary schools – May Park in Eastville and Hannah More in St Philip's.

The 10- and 11-year-olds took part in physiotherapy, management, sports journalism, scouting, nutrition and fitness and the day ended with a football tournament.

The City Academy has been linked with the former England captain's academy, in Greenwich, London, for two years and Beckham visited the school in March 2007.

The school is one of three in the country chosen for a pilot project where pupils are trained to pass on the "David Beckham experience" to others. City Academy sent 16 Year 11 pupils to lead the sessions.

PE teacher Kate Hurst, who co-ordinates City Academy's work with The David Beckham Academy, said: "It's a fantastic opportunity for our current Year 11s as it's teaching them how to be responsible and giving them the chance to be leaders.

"The primary pupils benefit in all ways because the experience is cross curricular, it's not just about football but about developing core subjects like English, maths and science in a fun way.

"They will learn about measuring their heartbeat before, during and after physical activity and this will delve into maths and science as well as sport and fitness.

"Another benefit is that pupils don't just sit down and listen – it's totally interactive and the learning resources provided by The David Beckham Academy are really state of the art."
