Dave Payne: I loved the football-related story and pictures that recently appeared in the Bristol Evening Post featuring the music legend Paul Weller.

He arrived at a junior football match in Bristol to watch his girlfriend's younger brother play for Coalpit Heath Under-Nines.

Weller was pictured with the team and looked every inch the rock star. Many spectators managed to get his autograph, as well as their photograph taken with the man known in music circles as the Modfather.

I have to admit I am a massive fan of his, and I especially loved his music when he was in the Specials!

I can recall a similar experience, only on this occasion it involved me and the sporting legend Sir Ian Botham.

During my time playing for Bath City, we were up against Yeovil Town, who had Botham playing up front. As we left the pitch, I went up to him and asked if he would do me a huge favour.

I asked him if he would come up to me in the bar after we had showered, and ask me by my name to join him for a drink.

So there I was enjoying a pint in the bar, surrounded by family and friends, when over strolled Botham (or Beefy to his mates).

In a slightly raised voice, he said: "Hey Payner, fancy joining me for a drink?"

I looked over my shoulder and said: "Not now Beefy, can't you see I'm busy with my family and friends!"

Something quite remarkable happened the other week, during my Brislington Reserves match against Timsbury Athletic.

Jeff Hazell – my veteran defender – scored a goal!

It was his first goal for nine years – and that includes training sessions!

What a goal it was though, he struck it from about 30 yards out, and it almost broke the top corner of the goal net.

It was a surprise to all of us present, because usually Jeff just shins the ball forward – in fact most weeks I double-check to make sure his football boots are on the correct feet!

As you can imagine, he hasn't stopped talking about it! He came to training the week after telling anyone that would listen that he was now on a roll and expected to get double figures this season.

He did actually score again last week – only this time, true to form, it was in his own net!
