A West athlete was among competitors leading another gold rush at the Beijing Paralympics.

Britain won four gold medals on the first day of action to get the event off to a flying start.

Cyclist Darren Kenny from Vorswood, Dorset, broke a world record in the Laoshan Velodrome to claim gold.

Kenny, 38, shattered his own CP3 world record by six seconds before winning the individual pursuit.

Kenny, who suffers from cerebral palsy, said: "It all went according to plan, no problems at all.

"I'm overjoyed and relieved to get the gold – we've put a lot of work into it so it's just the relief that it's done."

Fellow cyclists Simon Richardson and Aileen McGlynn also broke world records.

Britain is second in the medal table.
