New role: Jockey Kevin Darley
Apiafi will join the PJA board of directors along with Ann Saunders, the organisation's company secretary.
PJA chairman Rod Street said: "We are very sad to see Josh go but respect his position and wish him every success with his new venture. Moreover, we are delighted to retain his commercial input at board level.
"Kevin Darley's appointment reflects both the PJA's excellent succession planning and Kevin's progress since joining us as industry liaison director in 2008.
"He commands great respect with the jockeys and in wider racing circles. He will be a terrific asset."
Darley added: "I feel very honoured to have been asked to take on the role.
"I have been involved with the PJA throughout my riding career and have always had a passion for everything it stands for.
"I look forward to continuing my work with the team in Newbury."
