1991: BBC television commentator Ron Pickering died, aged 60. A renowned coach, he guided Lynn Davies to the 1964 Olympic long jump gold medal.

2002: Aston Villa striker Darius Vassell scored on his England debut in a 1-1 draw in Holland.

2004: Gordon Strachan resigned as manager of Southampton, having previously declared his intention to quit at the end of the season.

1989: Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Mohammad took 12 hours to score 163 runs against New Zealand in Wellington, including a record 11-and-a-half hours to reach 150.

1992: Liverpool signed a then-record £4million four-year sponsorship deal with brewers Carlsberg.

1999: Arsenal offered to replay their FA Cup third-round clash against Sheffield United after a controversial Marc Overmars goal had decided the original tie.

2006: Jim Duffy was appointed director of football at Hearts. He lasted less than six weeks before being sacked, along with manager Graham Rix.

2009: The second Test between England and West Indies was abandoned after 10 balls when the playing surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua was deemed unfit. The match was relocated to the Antigua Recreation Ground two days later and ended as a draw.

2009: Chelsea confirmed losses of £65.7million for the year to June 2008.
