The Bristol Post

REGARDING taxing Bristol businesses for parking, I have just listened to a very disgruntled and angry businessman in Nottingham on Radio 5 Live stating what I and many other people have been saying about charging businesses for providing parking for their employees will cost jobs.

On March 30 Nottingham became the first local council to charge businesses for parking.

We see that Bristol councillor Tim Kent is using Nottingham as an example so that Bristol could follow in their footsteps – folly, foolish, dangerous, damaging.

Well he best be aware that Bristol businesses will also be following in their footsteps if the businessman on the radio is anything to go by.

The Nottingham employer stated clearly that it was seen by the businesses as an additional tax, which will result in less people being employed and will also contribute to people being made redundant.

In Nottingham they want to use the money to dispose of the council run bus service and develop its tram system (apparently it is the best bus service in the country, which proves another point I have been making to bring back the BJS so that Bristol could run the buses in Bristol). Another council fixing something that is not broken, as Bristol has done with the Fishponds/Manor Road junction in Fishponds, Bristol.

Do councils not realise they do not make wealth and that they easily spend it? They do not generate financial growth that generates jobs, it is commercial businesses that make money to be spent by councils, government departments and employees in the economy, both local and national.

No fear of Robin Hood moving to Bristol, there will be no wealthy businesses to raid. Hang on though, we have Councillor Tim Kent, he is our Robin Hood.
