Radio One DJ Chris Moyles is backing the bid to bring the World Cup to England and Bristol in 2018.

Chris, a Leeds United fan, said that he would love to see the competition come to his home town as well as Bristol, which he visited on Thursday to host an A-levels results party.

"Bristol is a lovely city," said Chris, 34. "Having the World Cup here would be brilliant. The people are great, it's a beautiful place, very pretty.

"Bristol would be a great venue for the World Cup. We had the Euros in Leeds in 1996 and it was amazing.

"I was also lucky enough to go to Portugal for the World Cup in 2006 so I know first-hand what amazing experiences they are. They are so much fun, everyone has a great time and they bring a lot of money into the cities that hold games. Fans from all over the world can party together. It really is wonderful."

Chris stayed in the Marriott Royal hotel on College Green during his stay in Bristol, and on Friday broadcast his breakfast show to more than eight million people from the BBC studios on Whiteladies Road.

He told listeners that Bristol was a lovely city and said that he and his breakfast show team had been to a bar on the Harbourside on Thursday afternoon, where they enjoyed soaking up the atmosphere of the city.

Before going on stage at the O2 Academy, he told the Evening Post: "We were all very excited about coming to Bristol and the show we put on here is the biggest we have ever done. It just shows how passionate the people of Bristol are.

"We were going to try to get Justin Lee Collins down, but he had an ear infection unfortunately."

On Tuesday, the city council must hand in the latest draft of its bid to the England 2018 World Cup team and on September 10, the England 2018 team makes its last visit to Bristol. The final bid must be submitted on or before November 6 and 12 venues will be chosen on December 14.

● Plymouth have launched a late bid to become a host city for the 2018 World Cup. Plymouth Argyle football club are leading a consortium to plan and build a new 40,000-plus capacity stadium.

“I, for one, do not follow football, let alone the local teams or any other as it happens. BBC's Chris Moyles is here in the viscinity for a few hours and all of a sudden he's a spokesman for the City of Bristol?

London, and let's face it, the rest of the UK cannot really afford the 2012 Olympics, so to have a massive burden placed on Bristol to support football at World Cup level must be insanity!

We live in the south of Bristol. Swimming pools are being closed, sports grounds are being built on and other council owned facilities are being either closed or sold off.

Here's another idea: The BBC are moving staff out of Bristol. Why not move the council with them too. We can stop paying Council Tax and just pay the TV licence instead!”

“Plymouth announced a belated entry into the bidding to become a host should England be successful.

However, the stadium proposed for the Devon city is at the design stage. Bristol City's is at the planning stage.

How anyone can say Plymouth is favourite over Bristol is nonsensical.

No-one knows because there are pros and cons for both cities.

Bristol has the bigger city region population and larger infrastructure whereas Plymouth's location in the far South West might be considered its main advantage.”

“I'm guessing the previous seven comments are all from the same person...

This is a great story and Bristol is an ideal location to host world cup matches. We will promote Bristol, Bath and Wells as an introduction to the world before the matches start. This is one of the greatest unspoilt areas of England and gateway to the South West.”

“What a splendid unbiased view of a non-Bristol citizen and of course, thoroughly good reporting from the BEP....

    NOT.....

One afternoon in the Pub, a stay in a fairly good hotel then a view of the enire City of Bristol. He probably thinks bristol is only 2 miles long and 500 meters wide..

He should take a look at the proposed site, the destrucion of land, the chaos of the roads post-build and the lack of infrastructure - that even if promised, will NEVER get built. And lets face it, who will drive from one side of the stadium to the other side, just to get a bus back to the stadium..??

As for transport, where are these people going to park...

If the stadium was built next to Temple Meads, then transport could be made available from the Railway, cyclepaths, footpaths, ROADS, motorways and the RIVER....
Not only that, there is less of an issue with residential properties, less polution, less money to be spent on roads / rail, accomodation is already present in that area and it is CENTRAL to the City with more than ONE ROAD to it's location....

Damn you stupid Planners and since when have the Journalists of the Bristol Evening Post had the credentials to judge on local developments...

As a NEW PAPER, your views should be un-biased and based on the truth...

I'm wondering how many staff of the BEP actually live near Ashton Gate and are trying to get the stadium built further away from their homes because they don't like the noise and do NOT want the development on their doorstep, ANY MORE..?

    It makes you wonder......!”

Who could possibly want to go to Plymouth?”
